Debbie Rice Memorial Scholarship
Scholarship Sponsored by Alabama Leaders in Educational Technology
The Alabama Leaders in Educational Technology (ALET) is offering its 2026 Debbie Rice Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $10,000 to graduating high school seniors. Completed applications and all supporting materials must be postmarked by December 5, 2025, in the formats noted below.
ALET Member Scholarship (additional information)
- Students whose parent is an ALET member who wish to be considered for the separate $5,000 ALET Member Scholarship must indicate that relationship on page 2 of the application.
- An applicant may receive either the $10,000 Debbie Rice Memorial Scholarship or the $5,000 ALET Member Scholarship, but not both.
- Previous recipients of the ALET Member Scholarship are not eligible to receive that award a second time.
- A list of school systems that qualify for this program is included in the application packet.
Eligibility requirements
To be eligible, applicants must meet all of the following:
- Be a senior enrolled in an accredited Alabama high school.
- Be enrolled in a school system whose technology director was a current ALET member as of September 30, 2025.
- Have a minimum unweighted cumulative GPA of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale.
- Have an ACT composite score of 17 or higher.
- Obtain a signature/endorsement from the student’s guidance counselor or principal on the application confirming eligibility.
- Plan to attend an accredited college, university, or technical school that has a physical campus located in Alabama (fully online institutions do not meet the requirement).
- Demonstrate an interest in pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or another technology-related field.
- Show a history of volunteer service and active involvement in school or community extracurricular activities.
Application submission instructions
- Use the required materials checklist in the packet to confirm your application will be complete. Prepare every form and document listed.
- All application packets must be mailed via the U.S. Postal Service or another carrier and postmarked by December 5, 2025.
- Except where noted, all supporting documents (including letters of recommendation) must be included inside the mailed packet. The only exception is the high school transcript, which may be sent separately as described below.
- Incomplete packets will not be reviewed. Applicants cannot add items to the packet after ALET receives it (transcripts are the sole exception).
Required items to include in your mailed scholarship packet
- Completed application form (filled out entirely).
- Signed Statement of Accuracy and Conditions.
- Resume — follow the format and content requirements listed in the Checklist.
- Essay — follow the instructions in the Checklist precisely (points may be lost for not following directions or answering questions out of order).
- Two letters of recommendation:
- Each letter must be signed and include the writer’s printed name, phone number, mailing address, and email address.
- One letter must be from the student’s high school principal or guidance counselor.
- Letters must be included in the mailed packet; they may not be submitted by email.
- Copy of first grading period report card for the current school year (a photocopy is acceptable).
- ACT score report if the ACT score is not shown on the high school transcript.
Transcript submission
- Transcripts must be issued by the student’s school but do not need to be official.
- Transcripts may either be placed inside the mailed packet or sent directly from the school.
- If the transcript is sent separately, it must be emailed or postmarked by December 5, 2025.
